A conference to exchange experience of university student volunteers' science popularization initiative on rural environment protection was held on Dec. 14 in Beijing .

The conference summed up the experience since 2007 when the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences (CSES) launched the initiative in cooperation with the China Agricultural University , Beijing University of Science and Technology, Tsinghua University , Beijing Forestry University , and College of Urban and Environmental Sciences of Peking University. The initiative has proved successful and is warmly welcomed by the farmers. 

The year 2009 is the third year of the initiative. During the summer vocation of 2009, CSES, together with the China Agricultural University, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Tsinghua University, Beijing Forestry University, College of Urban and Environmental Sciences of Peking University, organized more than 1,200 student volunteers in 117 work teams and carried out various forms of science propagation activities on environmental protection in about 280 villages. The volunteers put on 20,000 set of posters in the public areas. In the meantime, they dispensed 2,000 energy-saving lamps donated by GE to the remote villages and widely disseminated the knowledge and concept of environmental protection in rural areas.
